It was our first time to actually see humpback whales (seen here). We also saw sea lions, seals, puffins, bald eagles and sea otters. It was just fabulous.

Now, school has started again and Candice is in the 8th grade and loves it. I'm not so sure its school or the social aspect she loves so much.

The practice is growing by leaps and bounds. I'll have done 11 deliveries this month and set a new record for the practice. Glen Elrod Photography.

Not that this photo IS the elusive Kenai skunk, but it fit the weekend. My buddies and I went on a charter fishing for King Salmon on the Kenai River. Our guide had 30+ years experience, but he had ME on board. 6 hours later and none of us on the boat had caught a fish. I managed to snag a log, but that was it.

So what does the bear have to do with it? Just so the trip wasn't a complete bust, I brought my new 100-400 IS L lens (but left the 40D at home just in case it took a drink in the river) and we stopped for wildlife on the way home. This bear was a LONG way away. When I stopped and pulled out the big lens the traffic of tourists stopped and they all whipped out their camera phones! I laughed.

So all was not lost, I got this guy, a young moose, a few eagles, an arctic tern in flight and some scenery. All in all, a good trip.

Glen

noreply@blogger.com (D. This lady was wandering around the neighborhood with her two calves and stayed put long enough for me (and my wife and daughter and neighbors) to all have a nice long look and admire her and her children.

So, 30 minutes and a hundred or so pictures later and we left them in peace.

The business is finally taking off and things are getting busier and busier for me. Its warmer (mid 30's) is a heat wave here so while I had two hours to kill while Candice was at a birthday party I decided to try my hand at duck photography. I manged to get to the spot, unload my gear, walk over to the spot I had predetermined and....watched all the ducks scatter! Not that I thought they would really be keen to me showing up in their area, but I figured with the constant noise of the road behind me, they would be used to some company.

Did I mention that this birthday party was schedule at the exact time the Iditarod restart was happening? Hopefully next year I'll make it.

I guess having to crop a duck photo while sitting in Alaska is better than fighting the French 'industrial action' my buddy James endured over the weekend.

Glen

noreply@blogger.com (D. Candice for weeks has been going on about NOT getting the solo in the upcoming choir concert. When she tried out, she was bummed, moody and told us her best friend Allie got the part. Tonight, we learned "the rest of the story"

Once we got to the concert, Cinda and I looked at the program and thought there must be a typo, her name was listed as the soloist for her favorite song. Well, this picture tells it all. She did have the solo and she did a great job! Too bad he won't see it for a few more years yet.

This photo came courtesy of my new 10-22mm EFs lens. I know, I shouldn't have gotten an EFs lens if I would SOME day switch to full frame. But as I see it, I haven't gotten rid of my Digital Rebel yet (although it will soon be going to my brother-in-law) why would I part ways with the 30D. I'm sure it will work nicely on it for some time to come.

Lastly, why do camera shops insist on berating those of us that don't use cheap UV filters in front of our expensive L glass???? I paid $1200 for my 70-200 2.8L why would I want to put a $30 or $100 dollar piece of glass in front of it?

Until another dark night,

Glen

noreply@blogger.com (D. I let out the dog two nights ago and voia, there is was, plain as day. So, now I'm on a quest to capture this ellusive site.

Last night I took my first of likely many trips to Hatcher Pass. Even though I didn't get any obvious Aurora moments, I did see more stars than I thought were possible to see. Hatcher pass is a good 20 miles from the nearest city and 60 miles from Anchorage, so it was dark! This photo was a shot in the dark, literally. I had no idea how or if it would turn out and had no idea where that hut would figure in the final composition.

Next time, I hope for a good show.

Glen

noreply@blogger.com (D. Glen Elrod Photography.

Well, as you probably know we have moved from England back to Alaska. What a trip! 26 hours with two dogs in cargo. Thankfully, we did get to see them at customs in DC.

We have been here about a month and are slowly beginning to get things arranged. Of course, our furniture (household goods) won't be here until December. Our car won't be here until November and at the rate finance is going, I won't get my final active duty pay check until January! Somehow, you would think I was the first person to ever separate from the military. Its a wonder we ever get paid.

The practice will start 1 November and I'll get to start working in the hospital 1 December. Its all a long sad story of missed deadlines, delay in postage as to why I'm not starting sooner. The name of the practice is going to be Sleeping Lady Women's Health Care. That was after much debate as to which mountain to pick to name it after. Denali was taken. Pioneer Peak sounded to 18th century and my personal favorite is this one seen here...Twin Peaks.

If you look at the flickr site I have some more photos of the area.

Glen

noreply@blogger.com (D. Orders aren't in yet, but I'm not particularly worried. We should get everything in on time. Its just a bit over a week until we head out to Alaska for a house hunting trip. Cinda, Candice and I along with our friends Carri and 2 of her 4 children, Cassi and Mitchell went to London for the day to see Mary Poppins.

A little aside, Mary Poppins is an absolute MUST see when you are in London. Phenomenal isn't enough to explain how good it is.

Anyway, we had talked on the drive down that it would just be so cool to run in to a celeb just walking around London. And sure enough...WE DID! These young men were so nice and gracious to chat for a second and let us get our 15 seconds of standing next to fame. I was amazed at just how normal they could be.

As the count down gets closer, I will miss London an aweful lot.

Glen

noreply@blogger.com (D.
